Cryolipolysis
Cryolipolysis, commonly known as “fat freezing,” is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure used to reduce localized areas of fat by targeting and freezing fat cells. It is based on the principle that fat cells are more sensitive to cold temperatures than surrounding tissues, and controlled cooling can selectively destroy fat cells without harming the skin or other structures.
Indications of Cryolipolysis
Patients who wish to reduce a localized fat bulge that has persisted despite diet and exercise are best suited for Cryolipolysis. The goal of Cryolipolysis is to reduce the volume of fat in a fatty bulge. Some patients may opt to have more than one area treated or to retreat an area more than once.
How Cryolipolysis is typically done:
Assessment: Before the procedure, a qualified healthcare professional will evaluate the target areas to determine if the patient is a suitable candidate for Cryolipolysis. The treatment is most effective for small, localized areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.
Application of Cooling Device: During the procedure, a cooling applicator is placed on the targeted area. The device uses suction to draw the bulge of fat into the applicator, where controlled cooling is then applied to the fat cells.
Cooling Process: The cooling process lasts for about 30 to 60 minutes, during which the fat cells are exposed to temperatures low enough to cause crystallization, but not low enough to damage the surrounding tissues.
Apoptosis of Fat Cells: After Cryolipolysis, the frozen fat cells undergo a natural cell death process called apoptosis. Over the following weeks and months, the body’s immune system gradually clears away the damaged fat cells.
Results: The treated area typically starts to show noticeable fat reduction within a few weeks, with optimal results appearing after two to three months. Multiple sessions may be required for more significant fat reduction, depending on the individual’s goals and the treatment area.
The benefits of Cryolipolysis include:
Non-surgical and non-invasive: Cryolipolysis does not require incisions, needles, or anesthesia, making it a more comfortable option for individuals who wish to avoid surgery.
Minimal downtime: After the procedure, most people can resume their normal activities immediately, as there is no need for recovery time.
Targeted fat reduction: Cryolipolysis allows for targeted fat reduction, focusing on specific areas of concern, such as love handles, belly fat, thigh fat, and double chins.
Natural-looking results: Because the fat reduction is gradual, the results tend to look more natural than more aggressive fat removal methods.
Long-lasting effects: Once the treated fat cells are eliminated from the body, they typically do not return. However, it’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle to prevent the growth of new fat cells in the treated areas.
Common areas of the body where Cryolipolysis is done
- Abdomen (belly fat)
- Flanks (love handles)
- Thighs
- Buttocks
- Upper arms
- Double chin
Cryolipolysis – Frequently Asked Questions
What are the risks of Cryolipolysis?
The complication rate is low and the satisfaction rate is high. There is a risk of surface irregularities and asymmetry. Rarely, in less than 1 percent, patients may have paradoxical fat hyperplasia, which is an unexpected increase in the number of fat cells.
What are the results of Cryolipolysis?
The injured fat cells are gradually eliminated by the body over 1 to 3 months. During that time the fatty bulge decreases in size, with an average fat reduction of about 20 percent.
What are the alternatives to Cryolipolysis or fat freezing?
Our 3D Lipo treatment is the best treatment option if you have a roll of fat. If you are looking for circumference loss e.g., you are looking to shrink the entire stomach area then fat freezing is the ideal treatment. Both of these treatment types are conducted via the same device – the 3D Ultimate Pro machine.
How do I know if Cryolipolysis or Fat Freezing is right for me?
If you are unsure which of our fat reduction treatments are best for you, please book a FREE body consult and our expert body therapist will be able to advise.
Does the Cryolipolysis or fat freezing treatment come with any risks?
Cryolipolysis fat freezing is unsuitable for pregnant / breastfeeding women. A full list of side effects cautions and contraindications will be discussed with you during your consultation.
Should I do anything specific before or after my treatment?
Do not consume large meals immediately before your procedure, or directly afterwards. We also recommend avoiding alcohol and caffeine on the day of your treatment.
