Otoplasty, also known as ear reshaping or pinning surgery, reshapes the ear cartilage to correct prominent (protruding) ears, asymmetry between the two sides, or congenital deformities. The procedure can pin protruding ears closer to the head, refine the contours of the ear cartilage, or reduce overly large ears for a more balanced facial appearance. Incisions are placed behind the ear so that scarring is hidden. Otoplasty can be performed under local anaesthesia in adults or under general anaesthesia in children, and the results are essentially permanent.
