What Is It?

Liposuction is a surgical technique that improves the body's contour by removing excess fat from deposits located between the skin and muscle. The procedure uses a small stainless-steel tube called a cannula, connected to a powerful suction pump and inserted into the fat through small incisions in the skin. As the cannula creates tiny tunnels through the fatty layers, fat is gently removed and these tunnels collapse after surgery, resulting in an improved body contour. Several advanced techniques are available, including tumescent liposuction (using local anaesthetic with lidocaine and epinephrine and no general anaesthesia), ultrasound-assisted liposuction (which liquefies fat for easier removal — useful on the upper abdomen, sides and back) and laser-assisted liposuction (which uses low-energy waves to liquefy fat for removal through a small cannula).
