Moles
Moles are the usual growths on skin that are actually excess melanin deposition at a particular site. They can appear anywhere on the skin and are of different shapes and sizes. Moles are usually brown to black in color due to pigment melanin.
At the start, moles are mostly flat and look like a freckle or they can be black in color. Over time they enlarge and some may develop hair. As the moles age they can become raised or they may not change at all.
In the recent years a lot has been spoken about cancer (Melanoma) and moles. What one must understand is that not all moles are cancerous. If a mole starts changing in size / color / shape / especially if the border becomes ragged, this may be sign of Melanoma. The risk of Melanoma in Indian skin is much lower compared to other skin types as the skin has pigmentation which shields it to a certain degree from the effects of harmful UV Rays.
Depending on the type and size of the lesion, it may be removed by RF (Radio Frequency), Laser or surgical excision after applying local anesthetic cream or local anesthesia. When necessary, we can also perform a biopsy on suspicious skin growths to determine whether cancer or another skin disease is present.
Warts/Skin tags
Warts are small, painless and often ‘cauliflower-like’ growths on the skin caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). While they are generally harmless, they can be a source of discomfort (when on the soles of the feet), disfigurement (when they appear on the face, neck regions etc) and generally embarrassing. Though benign in appearance, warts have the potential to spread to various parts of the body and also from person to person.
As they are contagious, it is better to remove them as soon as they appear otherwise they keep on spreading. They can be removed by RF (Radio Frequency), Laser or surgical excision after applying local anesthetic cream or local anesthesia.
