Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, also known as nose reshaping or a nose job, is a surgical procedure performed by a plastic surgeon to enhance the appearance or function of the nose.  Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves reshaping or reconstructing the nose. It can be performed for cosmetic purposes to improve the appearance of the nose, or for functional reasons to address breathing difficulties or correct nasal deformities. Rhinoplasty can involve altering the size, shape, projection, and proportion of the nose, as well as adjusting the nasal tip, nostrils, and nasal bridge.

Rhinoplasty is surgery to reshape the nose. It can make the nose larger or smaller; change the angle of the nose in relation to the upper lip; alter the tip of the nose; or correct bumps, indentations, or other defects in the nose.

Why is Rhinoplasty done?

Rhinoplasty enhances facial harmony and the proportions of your nose. It can also correct impaired breathing caused by structural defects in the nose. Rhinoplasty can change:

➞ Nose size in relation to facial balance

➞ Nose width at the bridge or in the size and position of the nostrils

➞ Nose profile with visible humps or depressions on the bridge

➞ Nasal tip that is enlarged or bulbous, drooping, upturned or hooked

➞ Nostrils that are large, wide, or upturned

➞ Nasal asymmetry

How is a Rhinoplasty done?

During rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes incisions to access the bones and cartilage that support the nose. The incisions are usually made inside the nose so that they are invisible after the surgery. Depending on the desired result, some bone and cartilage may be removed, or tissue may be added (either from another part of the body or using a synthetic filler). After the surgeon has rearranged and reshaped the bone and cartilage, the skin and tissue are rewrapped over the structure of the nose. A splint is placed outside the nose to support the new shape of the nose as it heals.

Post-Operative care

The splint and bandaging around your nose will be removed in about a week. Your face will feel puffy and the area around your eyes and nose will be bruised and swollen for several days. Cold compresses can help minimize the swelling and reduce pain. Your doctor may also recommend pain medicine. It takes about 10 to 14 days before most of the swelling and bruising improves. You will need to keep your head elevated and relatively still for the first few days after surgery. It may be several weeks before you can return to strenuous activities.

What is the recovery process like after rhinoplasty?

The recovery process after rhinoplasty can vary for each individual, but generally, patients can expect swelling, bruising, and some discomfort in the treated area for a week or two. Your surgeon may prescribe pain medication and provide specific post-operative instructions, such as keeping your head elevated, avoiding strenuous activities, and avoiding blowing your nose. It’s important to follow all post-operative instructions and attend follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress.

Are there any risks or complications associated with rhinoplasty?

As with any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries potential risks and complications. These can include bleeding, infection, adverse reactions to anesthesia, scarring, asymmetry, changes in nasal sensation, breathing difficulties, and the need for revision surgery. It’s important to discuss the potential risks with your plastic surgeon and ensure that you have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedure.

Rhinoplasty – Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to see the final results of rhinoplasty?

While most of the swelling and bruising subside within a few weeks after rhinoplasty, it can take several months for the nose to fully heal and for the final results to become apparent. The healing process is gradual, and the nose will continue to refine and settle into its new shape over time. It’s important to have patience and follow your surgeon’s guidance during the recovery period.

Can rhinoplasty be performed to correct breathing problems?

Yes, rhinoplasty can be performed to address functional issues with the nose, such as breathing difficulties caused by a deviated septum, nasal valve collapse, or other structural abnormalities. Functional rhinoplasty focuses on improving nasal airflow and correcting any anatomical issues that contribute to breathing problems. It’s important to discuss your concerns with your plastic surgeon, who can evaluate your nasal function and recommend the appropriate surgical approach.

Can Rhinoplasty Make Nose Smaller?

Rhinoplasty can make your nose smaller if some of the bone and cartilage is removed during surgery.

How Long Does It Take to recover after Rhinoplasty?

It normally takes up to six weeks to recover after rhinoplasty, however it may take up to 12 months for the swelling to be reduced completely.

Can Nose Reshaping Fix My Bent Nose?

If your nose is bent, your surgeon can help to fix the problem during nose reshaping surgery by breaking the nose bone and rearranging the cartilage.
