Liposuction

Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical technique that improves the body’s contour by removing excess fat from deposits located between the skin and muscle. Liposuction involves the use of a small stainless-steel tube, called a cannula (from the Latin word for reed, tube, cane). The cannula is connected to a powerful suction pump and inserted into the fat through small incisions in the skin. Fat removal is accomplished as the suction cannula creates tiny tunnels through the fatty layers. After surgery, these tiny tunnels collapse and thus result in an improved body contour.

What are the various types of liposuction?

There are various types of liposuction techniques available. They are:

Tumescent Liposuction

➞ A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area of your body. Next, a large amount of an anaesthetic solution containing lidocaine and epinephrine is injected into the fatty tissue before traditional liposuction is done. No General anaesthesia is required for this.

Ultrasound assisted Liposuction

➞ This technique uses ultrasound to liquefy the fat, which makes it easier to remove. This technique may be particularly helpful in removing fat from the upper abdomen, sides, and back.

Laser Assisted Liposuction

➞ this technique uses low-energy waves to liquefy the fat, which is removed through a small cannula.

How is liposuction performed?

Liposuction is typically performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The surgeon makes small incisions in the targeted area and inserts a thin, hollow tube called a cannula. The cannula is used to break up the fat deposits and suction them out of the body. Various techniques, such as traditional liposuction, tumescent liposuction, or ultrasound-assisted liposuction, may be used depending on the surgeon’s preference and the patient’s specific needs.

What is the recovery like after liposuction?

The recovery period after liposuction can vary depending on the extent of the procedure and the individual patient. Patients may experience some bruising, swelling, and discomfort in the treated areas, which can be managed with pain medication. Compression garments are usually worn to help reduce swelling and support the healing process. The specific post-operative instructions provided by your plastic surgeon should be followed for optimal recovery.

Can liposuction help with weight loss?

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure but rather a body contouring procedure. It is designed to remove localized areas of excess fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. The amount of fat removed during liposuction is typically modest and is not intended as a solution for overall weight loss. Liposuction can, however, help improve body proportions and enhance the appearance of specific areas.

Post operative care

Liposuction is done as an outpatient procedure. Sometimes local anaesthesia is used. You may be given a sedative to help you relax while the procedure is on. The area of the body that was treated is firmly wrapped to help reduce swelling, bruising, and pain. You may have to wear the compression garment or wrap for 3 to 4 weeks. Expect some bruising and swelling for at least the first 7 to 10 days. Antibiotic coverage is given to prevent infection at the site. Normal activities can be resumed as soon as you feel comfortable.

Liposuction – Frequently Asked Question

How do I know if Liposuction is right for me?

Every patient is different, and so is every treatment plan. You should be considering liposuction if you are at your ideal weight, but have some loose skin and pockets of stubborn fat that you’re struggling to remove through diet and exercise.

Why is Liposuction different to more traditional another methods?

Liposuction is minimally invasive with a shorter downtime. It allows for more targeted sculpting when removing the fat, creating soft, desirable curves and contours. It creates less bruising and allows for increased skin retraction.

Is this a surgical or non-surgical procedure?

This is a surgical procedure, not to be confused with 3D liposuction and other non-invasive procedures. Your procedure will be performed under general anesthetic.

Will I be left with scars?

Yes, 2-3 very small 4-5mm scars that will fade with time. Many patients report that in time it becomes barely noticeable.

What is the aftercare like?

Following your procedure, our team are available on the phone 24 hours a day. You will be given clear aftercare instructions when you leave the Clinic, and all necessary follow up appointments will be scheduled in advance of your procedure. This includes your 6 week check in with your Surgeon.
